May 18, 2007 - UPDATE #3
Wes and Don called. They are currently at base camp around 7,000 feet. They left 14,200 feet yesterday and hiked all day in a snowstorm with about 10 feet visibility. They camped at 8,000 feet last night. They hiked for seven hours today and made it down to base camp where it is currently snowing. A member of another Mountain Trip team (the team that came after them) ended up hiking down with them. He was very sick the whole way. Don is doing much better today. To Carmen: Wes says Jesus is doing great. Two other members of their team have dropped down to 14,000 feet due to very bad headaches (Larry and Bill). Ed, Noel and David are still at 17,000 feet. They may end up coming down tomorrow. Still hoping for a summit attempt. Wes, Don, Jesus and the other team member will try to get a flight back to Talkeetna tomorrow. There have not been any flights out the last three days due to weather. More bad news from Denali: two people from Washington have died (one last night and one this morning). They were roped together near 19,000 feet and fell 1,900 feet down a 40 degree slope. This mountain is very dangerous.
